The Korean Customs Service has announced the introduction of an automatic counterfeit detection system called “Intellectual Property Information Management System (IPIMS)” for automatic identification of imported counterfeit goods.
The new system favors the exchange of information between right holders and the Customs Office on a real time basis: IPIMS users are notified of the detention of counterfeit goods by SMS or email and expert reports can be filed on-line.
Korea Customs expects that the new IPIMS system will help minimize damages to legitimate trade while effectively preventing the import of counterfeits by enabling prompt identification of faked goods and improving customs officials’ capability to screen out them using a database of relevant information.
Trademark holders willing to use IPIMS can sign up for it on the portal system of the Korean Customs Service.
